A man, who shot dead a Delhi University student in 2011 after she snubbed his advances, was today sentenced to life imprisonment by a city court.
Additional Sessions Judge Vivek Kumar Gulia awarded the jail term to Vijay Saini for shooting dead 21-year-old Radhika Tanwar, a second year student, near a foot-over bridge outside Ramlal Anand College near Dhaula Kuan here.
He was held guilty of murder under the IPC and provisions of Arms Act for illegally possessing and using firearm.
According to the police, Saini was in love with Tanwar and used to stalk her. When she rejected him, he shot her dead to take revenge.
Three other men - Tabrez Ahmed, Shekh Shekhu and Asraf Ali - were also involved in the incident which took place on March 8, 2011.
They were convicted under section 212 (harbouring a criminal) of the IPC and under Arms Act and awarded varying jail terms by the court, said Inspector Balram, the Investigating Officer in the case.
Saini had shot her in her stomach and fled from the spot, the police had said, adding that the victim was taken to Safdurjung Hospital where she was declared brought dead.
The incident had caused outrage in the city and raised questions over the law and order situation in the capital.
Angry over the murder, a large number of students in Delhi University south campus had staged a demonstration against the lack of security for students.
