CPI(M) candidate for Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, Fuad Halim was Saturday assaulted in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district by alleged Trinamool Congress goons.
The Trinamool Congress has denied the allegations as "baseless".
He was assaulted in Diamond Harbour town but not injured, the police said adding some CPI-M workers who were with him were injured in the incident and taken to hospital for treatment.
This the second incident of attack on Halim while campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls. He was attacked allegedly by TMC on April 9 too and had to be admitted to hospital for treatment.
TMC leader and nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee is the sitting MP in the seat. Elections in the constituency will be held in the seventh and last phase on May 19.
"The TMC attacked our workers, who took shelter at the home of a local worker. The police later came and rescued us. The workers were badly beaten up," Halim alleged.
TMC secretary general Partha Chatterjee denied the allegations as "baseless and concocted".
