CPI moves calling attention notice in RS on role of guvs, LGs

Raising concerns over the federal structure of the country, the Communist Party of India has moved a calling attention notice in the Rajya Sabha on the role of governors and lieutenant governors (LGs).
Several questions have been raised in states like Puducherry on the role being played by LGs and governors.
CPI national secretary D Raja, who moved the motion, said while the governments in the states represent the will of the people, the governors and LGs remain in their gubernatorial positions at the pleasure of the president.
Several parties have questioned the role of governors and LGs in states like West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Puducherry and Delhi in the recent past, Raja added.

The move comes after the recent spat between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and state Governor K N Tripathi.
Banerjee had accused Tripathi of threatening her and acting like a "BJP block president".
The TMC chief said she even thought of quitting office over this "humiliation".
