A crab collector was taken away by a tiger from the forest of Pirkhali in the Sundarbans, the police said.
Bishnupada Mondal (42) and three others were catching crabs in a creek when a tiger caught him and and took him away.
Mondal's companions chased the tiger which left him and fled but by the time he was dead.
The three men took Mondal's body to their native village Satyanarayanpur under Gosaba police station where they were beaten up by other villagers, the police said.
The angry villagers accused the three men of being responsible for the death of Mondal who did not have papers to collect crabs.
