Around 70 persons were today rounded up during the dawn-to-dusk Chandil sub-division bandh called by JVM in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharswan district against implication of its Ichagarh MLA Arvind Kumar Singh in the murder of a BJP leader on Friday last.
Singh was named in the FIR lodged with the Bagmundi police station in Purulia district of West Bengal regarding gunning down of Anil Gope, a former president of BJP's Kurku block committee and a resident of Choura village under Tiruldih police station in Seraikela-Kharswan district.
Gope was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Friday morning when he had gone for a bath in a pond.
The bandh evoked mixed response in the sub-division as majority of shops, markets and business establishments downed shutters.
The bandh was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the sub-division, the police said adding 70 persons were taken into preventive custody.
Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM) sources said Singh was deliberately implicated in the murder case as the Assembly elections in Jharkhand was round the corner.
Singh, who was elected thrice from the Ichagarh constituency, was all set put up a tough contest for the BJP and was deliberately implicated in the Gope murder case to prevent him from contesting the polls, JVM local leaders claimed, demanding an impartial probe.
