DCW issues notice to Police,Social Welfare dept over shortage

Delhi Commission for Women has issued notices to the Social Welfare department and Delhi Police in connection with shortage of old age homes in the national capital.
While the Delhi Government's Social Welfare Department has been asked to explain the non-implementation of Senior Citizens Act which calls for one old age home in each district, Delhi Police has been asked whether or not it is sharing a monthly report with the Commissioner over crimes against senior citizens.
"The commission has observed an acute shortage of old age homes in Delhi. As per the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 it is mandatory for the department to establish atleast one old age home in each district. It has been observed that the said act has not been implemented properly," a DCW official said.

"The Department of Social Welfare has been asked to explain the steps taken for implementation of the act and reasons behind shortage of old age homes. It has been asked to share pending Proposals, if any, with the department for creation of old age homes in Delhi," he added.
The notice served to Delhi Police has sought data about number of senior citizens living within the jurisdiction of each police station and number of volunteer committees formed under it.
"Whether each Police Station is sending the Commissioner of Police, a monthly report on offences committed against senior citizens, as mandated by the Delhi Maintenance of Parents and Senior Citizen Rules 2010.

"The status of crimes against senior citizens and steps taken for their prevention has also been sought," the official said.
