"The incident took place yesterday night. Some unknown miscreants had burnt the bust that was covered by plastic for inauguration on November 23," Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Labhu Ram told PTI here.
Police have set up a team to nab the culprits behind the crime, Ram said. He also appealed to the people not to give in to rumours and maintain harmony.
Home Minister K J George and Bengaluru District In-Charge Minister Ramalinga Reddy also visited the spot.
He said the incident is highly condemnable as Rajkumar is a symbol of pride for not only Kannadigas, but the whole country. "He is the cultural ambassador of the country," the Home Minister added.
The situation is under control for now, Ram said.
Soon after the incident came to light, Kannada activists, including Vattal Paksha Leader Vattal Nagaraj assembled at the spot and staged protest raising slogans against the culprits and demanded their arrest.
