A new eight-lane bridge across Yamuna on down stream of the existing bridge-cum-barrage at Wazirabad is under construction and once operational, it will result in smooth flow of traffic.

The work has been entrusted to Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC).

Inspecting the site, Dikshit told officials and the contractors to expedite the construction to ensure that the bridge is commissioned by December next year on schedule.

"No delay will be tolerated in commissioning of the project as the new bridge will be crucial for smooth flow of traffic across Yamuna and other major roads on both sides of river. This will prove to be the new landmark of the capital.

"The construction company should monitor the progress on a daily basis in order ensure its commissioning as per their contractual obligation of December 2013. They have to make up for the delay which has taken place due to one or another reason," Dikshit said.

The Chief Minister was informed that the right and left carriage way of 1.4 km length each on western approach main flyover will be opened to traffic this month.

As far as loops on western approach are concerned, three will be opened by November while other three are likely to be opened by June next year.

The new bridge will connect Marginal Bund Road near Khajuri Khas intersection on the eastern side and Outer Ring Road on western side.

The bridge will consist of a western approach main flyover, western approach loops, eastern approach main flyover, eastern approach embankment and main bridge.
