Aimed at abolishing contractual system of employment in certain sectors in the national capital, the newly-constituted Delhi Advisory Contract Labour Board has called a meeting on December 20 to discuss the issue.
Delhi Labour Minister Gopal Rai said the board, which had been formed by the Delhi government on November 14, will address issues related to contractual labours in the national capital.
In his Independence Day speech, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had promised that his government would abolish the contractual system in certain sectors, like sanitation.
Delhi Advisory Contract Labour Board is a 13-member tripartite statutory board with the labour minister as its chairman.
Besides two MLAs, it has representatives from both employers and employees' unions.
"The board has called its meeting on December 20 to discuss various agendas including abolition of contractual system in permanent nature works. It will also ensure equal wages for equal work for contractual employees," Rai said at a press conference here.
He said "large-scale" violations have been reported to the labour department by contractual workers from time to time related to non payment of notified minimum wages, violation of provident fund, employees' state insurance and payment of bonus among others.
In August this year, Kejriwal had said the AAP government would abolish contractual system in areas that require regular employment throughout the year.
"For example, sanitation workers are required to do their job through the year. We will abolish contractual system in regular jobs. However, we will not change this system in areas of temporary employment," the chief minister had said.
