Delhi and Kamduni protests spontaneous: President

President Pranab Mukherjee today described the public protests against crime on women in Delhi and Kamduni as "spontaneous".
"Through out the country, including Delhi and Kamduni, common people have spontaneously protested against atrocity on women," Mukherjee told reporters at his ancestral house at Mirati village in Birbhum district.
"This is a good sign. These spontaneous protests indicate that the society is on the right track," he said.
He said such incidents (gang-rape cases of a paramedical student in Delhi and a college student at Kamduni in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal) were condemnable.
Earlier at a function at his old alma mater Kirnahar Shib Chandra High School, Mukherjee had said "society is not at all a civilised society where women are tortured."

The president was replying to the statement made by a teacher, who said "Sir, we are worshipping Durga, on the other hand the modesty of the women are being outraged everyday."

Mukherjee also said that "it is a matter of shame for a society. We have to keep up respect towards womenfolk."
According to the school's staff, the president got emotional during his visit to the school where he had studied in his childhood.
"After entering the school compound the president visibly became emotional. He spent around one hour and ten minutes though the time allotted was 45 minutes," said Arun Roy, a teacher at the school.

Mukherjee, who reached Kirnahar this afternoon, was received by West Bengal Fisheries minister Chandranath Sinha and the district magistrate J P Meena at a make-shift helipad.
The president would stay at his ancestral village for the next four days and would attend a number of programmes including the Durga puja celebration.
