Lt Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal today counselled youth to "pause and reflect" before moving ahead in life while guiding them to benefit from the elderly people in the society by learning from their experiences.
Baijal, while addressing 118th Founders Day function of Hindu College here, cited his own example of entering Civil Services on the advice of his parents, saying the present generation needs to press the "pause button" before they push the "fast forward button" and make a choice in their life.
The Lt Governor who also replied to a couple of queries from the function gathering, ducked a reference to tussle between his predecessor Najeeb Jung and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.
Replying to a questioner who cited "fight" between Jung and Kejriwal while urging him to work for the benefit of Delhi, Baijal said, "I have noted your advice, thank you!"
Baijal pointed to the generation gap between youth and elderly as a difference of attitude between persons of different ages, adding both can use one another as resource.
"Generation gap is due to difference of attitude between people of different age groups. With both sides having so much to offer, it is important that we see each other as resources to create a culture of tolerance and understanding."
Younger generation assumes it can learn everything there is to be known in life from the web yet some of the finest lessons come from people in your life, he said.
"Information is helpful but its understanding is transformative and it takes time. While you can learn to be an entrepreneur and run a business from books and online journals, the elderly are able to explain how to pick yourself up when a project fails and how to move ahead regardless of drawbacks," he said.
Replying to a question by a student asking how to bring change by removing ills such as rape and corruption inflicting the society, Baijal said that changes do take place but it might not be overnight.
"Every change has its own method of bringing about it, the change can not happen in a void. It may not happen in a jiffy or overnight, there may be some issues, but change does happen sometimes," he said.
The Lt Governor also assured the College to look into their problems and try to help as soon as possible.
Chairman of the Hindu College urged Baijal to expedite matters related to water connection to a girls hostel, and constructions on the college campus.
The meritorious students of the college were given awards during the function. A cultural programme was also staged by the students on the occasion.
