According to Executive Director (Corporate Communications) DMRC, Anuj Dayal, this would help the Metro systems to design their stations as eco-friendly structures and utilise natural resources like sunlight more effectively.
The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), a body involved in promoting the green building concept in India, will conduct this rating process.
They will also issue guidelines for designing the station structures as green buildings.
"DMRC has decided to be actively involved with this initiative as such rating will help a lot in encouraging the concept of green buildings not only in Metro systems but all infrastructure projects in the country," Dayal said.
After implementing these green designs and building norms, the DMRC can apply for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), a globally accepted green building certification programme that recognises the best-in class building strategies and practices.
DMRC has already announced that all the stations of its third phase of expansion along with 12 Receiving Sub Stations and residential quarters will be designed as green buildings.
Several cities across the country have decided to implement Metro systems. Apart from Kolkata and Delhi, Metro systems are also operational at Bengaluru and Mumbai.
Many other cities such as Jaipur, Kochi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Pune will also have Metro corridors in the years to come.
