Shortly after his record highest T20 score was eclipsed by Chris Gayle, Kolkata Knight Riders' Brendon McCullum today said he was delighted to see his record being bettered by a batsman as "destructive" as the strapping Jamaican.
Gayle smashed the most breathtaking knock in the history of Twenty20 cricket, blasting an incredible 175 off a mere 66 balls, as Royal Challengers Bangalore crushed Pune Warriors by a record 130 runs in the Pepsi Indian Premier League in Bangalore.
Gayle hit the fastest century, off just 30 balls, and the highest-ever individual score in a T20 game, surpassing McCullum, who had hit 158 off 73 balls against RCB at this very Chinnaswamy Stadium in the inaugural edition in 2008.
"I am delighted that some body as destructive as Chris (Gayle) has now taken over," McCullum said at the team hotel here.
"I was following Chris' innings on the bus while coming back from practice. It's an unbelievable inning. He is the most powerful batsman in T20 and deserves that record," said the Kiwi.
"I knew all along that it would be broken and that it had to be Chris," said McCullum.
