Diplomat among 250 fresh dengue cases in last 1 week in Delhi

A Palestinian diplomat and his two sons are among 250 fresh cases of dengue reported in the city in the past one week, taking the total number of people affected by the mosquito-borne disease to over 780.
Municipal corporation officials said number of dengue cases reported between January and August has been the highest compared to the corresponding period in the last five years. Till August 21, the number of cases reported stood at 530.
First Secretary in Palestine Embassy Abd Elrazeg Abu Jazer has been admitted to a private hospital in Chanakyapuri on Wednesday while his two sons Ashraf (23) and Amzad (16) were admitted to a hospital today.
Ashraf, who is into film-making, had come to Delhi a month back while Amzad is studying in a school here, the 45-year-old diplomat said.
"There has been an increase of 250 cases of dengue in the city in the last one week. The total number of dengue cases has reached 780 till today," South Delhi Mayor Subhash Arya said.
Dengue cases have been reported from various posh localities in the city including from Lutyens Bungalow Zone.
The number of cases from January 1 to August 21 for the last four years were -- 28 (2014), 96 (2013), 11 (2012), 60 (2011). For the same period in 2010, over 550 cases were reported.
Two persons have died due to the vector-borne disease, as per official figure.
As per municipal norm, only ELISA test confirmed cases are taken in the official death count from the disease.
Till August 21, north Delhi had recorded the highest number of 238 cases. Last year, the city had reported three deaths and recorded nearly 1,000 cases.
Until August 18, the SDMC had issued over 80 challans to government and educational institutions in the city, including JNU, DDA, DTC and PWD for breeding of mosquitoes in their premises.
