Born in Winnetka, Illinois, Baldwin was discovered by a Hollywood talent scout in his senior year at Stanford.
According to Variety, he started out as an actor, who went on to become one of Paramount's "Golden Circle of Newcomers" and featured in films including "Stalag 17", "Little Boy Lost" and Cecil B DeMille's "The Ten Commandments".
He trekked with Julie Harris in the play 'The Warm Peninsula' and then moved to Italy, where he starred in films by Robert Rossellini, Dino Risi and Francesco Rosi.
Baldwin assisted director Vittorio De Sica on "Woman Times Seven" and "A Place for Lovers". He won the first prize at the Venice Film Festival for "Some Sort of Cage", a docudrama about Synanon House, which he wrote, produced and directed.
After his return to the United States, he was hired by "Dick Van Dyke Show" producer Sheldon Leonard.
He won an Emmy in 1988 for the TV series "The Wonder Years".
Baldwin also helmed comedy movie "Meet Wally Sparks", which featured Rodney Dangerfield and produced the HBO movie "As Summers Die" starring Bette Davis, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Scott Glenn.
His last directing credit was an episode of the Disney Channel sitcom "Even Stevens" (2002).
