A case has been registered against Usilampatti DMK Union Councillor Ukkirapandi, DMK block secretary Povunraj and 50 others in this regard, police said.
Congress functionary S R Thangaraman, who is also Madurai Parliament Youth Congress' president, managed to escape.
The group entered the quarry when Thangaraman was busy with official work and chased away cattle tethered at the site. They allegedly tried to attack him when he questioned them but he managed to escape.
On a complaint from Thangaraman, police registered a case under various sections of IPC, including trespass.
