Acting on intelligence, raids were conducted at several places in the city including hotels and Howrah stations and 11 persons were intercepted.
All of them had come from Mizoram and Manipur, a senior DRI official said.
A total of 34 kgs of gold, in form of bars, was seized from them. They had hidden the gold bars in a false cavity of the footwear worn by them, he said.
The gold, valuing Rs 10 crore, has been seized and all the accused have been arrested.
"Investigations reveal that the gold bars were smuggled into India from Myanmar and were brought to Kolkata, a major transit point for for final deliveries to different parts of India," the official said.
The accused, all of them in the age group of 25 to 35 years, claimed to be small-time businessmen and have failed to give any proof of the legal possession of the yellow metal, he said.
