With this aim, the transport department has roped in IIT Kharagpur to carry out a detailed study, find shortcomings and recommend an integrated system of issuing driving licences.
"We are in the process of evaluating and preparing a report which is likely to be submitted in October. Drivers are a key component of the road safety programme. An important meeting in few days is slated to be held involving all driving schools," IIT transport department Professor Bhargab Maitra who is heading the task force said here today on the sidelines of ICC organised seminar.
"Driving is not just about skills. A driver should have the knowledge of what he is doing and why and must have complete understanding of the signage and road rules," Maitra said.
The institute will help streamline the process of issuing driving licences at least across West Bengal.
