With consumer complaints against e-commerce companies on the upswing, Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today said she will be working in concert with the consumer affairs ministry and states on the matter.
"I will work with state governments and also with the consumer affairs ministry (about the issue)," she told reporters here today.
The issue was discussed at a meeting here convened by Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan yesterday, which was attended by Sitharaman.
Nearly 46 companies, including Flipkart, Xiaomi, Olx.In and Bookmyoffer.Com, have not been responding to mails sent to them with regard to redressal of such grievances and the consumer affairs ministry clearly said yesterday it will take stringent action against such firms.
According to Sitharaman, it is the state governments that have to see if the online firms are registered or are violating any state rules or whether they are fake companies or not.
She put the onus on state investigators to figure out if the address and phone numbers given by these firms are fake or real. The consumer affairs ministry has shared the list of companies with the commerce ministry.
Paswan has said the government has a tie-up with 200-odd e-commerce companies and has been directly resolving the complaints with them.
