East Delhi will soon get a synthetic running track similar to those at Chattrasal and Tyagraj stadiums, built during the Commonwealth Games.
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia today laid the foundation stone for building the athletic track at East Vinod Nagar, which is expected to be functional in next six months.
The estimated project cost is a whopping Rs 550 crore.
Synthetic tracks are all-weather tracks which allow athletes to compete even in bad weather without serious performance loss and improve their results over other surfaces.
"It is difficult for the atheletes to perform well, especially when it rains in the existing 400-metre cinder track at the East Vinod Nagat Sports Complex as it turns muddy," a Public Works Department (PWD) official said.
The agency is implementing the project and has set a deadline of six months for its completion.
"Once ready, the track would be open to every sport enthusiast. We plan to hold big sporting events on it too," Sisodia said at the event.
Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's demonetisation move of high-value currency notes, Sisodia said "some people" are giving people false hope that standing in queues will help get back black money.
"It is all a big scam. We are working and spending on our children who will reap gold for us," he added.
At present, Delhi has five state of the art synthetic tracks.
