The Election Commission today cancelled a bypoll to a Maharashtra legislative assembly seat after it was brought to its notice that an election petition is pending in the Bombay High Court.
"The Commission had announced by-election from 130-Palghar (ST) Assembly Constituency to fill vacancy in the Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra...It has been brought to the Commission's notice that an election petition is pending in Bombay Bench of High Court of Bombay...," the EC said in a statement here.
It said, keeping in mind that the matter is sub judice, it is cancelling its announcement of by-election "for the time being".
The seat fell vacant following the death of Palghar MLA Krushna Ghoda on May 24. The bypoll was to take place on June 27.
