The East Central Railway (ECR) has launched an awareness programme on the danger of casually crossing railway tracks in view of its 802 unmanned level crossings (ULC) where accidents occur frequently.
"Accidents at unmanned level crossings are a matter of concern and in order to check it, the Railway has recently launched a massive awareness drive among people as fault of citizens has come to light in most of the mishaps at such spots," ECR Spokesman Arvind Kumar Rajak told PTI.
ECR has been regularly creating awareness through newspapers, TV, Radio, hoardings, posters, pamphlets and organising 'nukkad natak' on negotiating unmanned crossings, Rajak said.
Three divisions of the ECR have a huge number of unmanned level crossings with Samastipur accounting for 253, Mughalsarai 118 and Danapur 106, as per official record. Two other divisions namely Sonepur and Dhanbad have 62 and 21 unmanned level crossings respectively.
There are 1195 manned level crossings under ECR with Samastipur accounting for the maximum 351 followed by Sonepur 294.
Last month, Additional General Manager of ECR T P Singh had said that the Railway was working on manning all the 802 unmanned Railway crossings, building roads over bridges (ROB)and roads under bridges (RUB) in ECR zone by 2020.
Rajak said in 2014-15, ECR constructed 14 ROBs and 16 RUBs. Similarly, in 2015-16 it built 17 RUBs and 7 ROBs.
