EESL to take energy-efficiency fan scheme to five more states

The distribution scheme of energy-efficient ceiling fans at lower rates is set be rolled out in five more states -- Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh -- in the next 2-3 months.
State-run Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) is distributing these 50 watt energy-efficient ceiling fans in districts of West Godavari and Vijayawada of Andhra Pradesh and Varanasi and Kanpur of Uttar Pradesh.
"We have planned to launch the scheme to distribute these energy-efficient fans in 5 states -- Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh -- in the next 2-3 months," EESL Managing Director Saurabh Kumar told PTI.

"EESL has floated a tender for procuring 10 lakh energy-efficient fans. We are expecting delivery of these fans from August onwards."
These fans are being provided at Rs 1,150 per unit on upfront payment and Rs 1,200 in equated monthly instalments. The EMI is adjusted against electricity bills of consumers.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency-rated five-star (the highest level of efficiency) 50 watt ceiling fans are available at not less than Rs 1,500 per unit in the market.

EESL has already distributed 42,000 such fans in the four districts under the pilot project. Enthused by the response, EESL has tied up with power distribution utilities in the five states to expand its reach.

Kumar said, "After success of the LED bulb scheme, EESL is now planning to distribute LED tubelights. We had procured around 50,000 such tubelights at about Rs 300 per unit. We have planned to procure 1 crore such tubelights."
These 18-20 watt LED tubelights come as an easy substitute for the conventional 42-watt ones.
Kumar expressed hope that the price of these tubelights will also drop on the lines of LED bulbs.
EESL's latest procurement price for LED bulbs is Rs 54.90 per unit. When it started procuring these lights, the market price was over Rs 300 per unit.
EESL is distributing LED bulbs at a price ranging between Rs 75 and Rs 90. It has already distributed over 13 crore LED bulbs so far against the target of 77 crore.

On exploring opportunities overseas, Kumar said, "In South East Asia, we will focus on Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In South-East Asia, we will explore Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines. In Europe, we will look at the UK and France. Similarly, we have plans for the US, Brazil, South Africa and Russia."
EESL has recently entered a strategic agreement with The Energy Resources Institute to work jointly for the achievement of common goals and objectives related to energy efficiency in India and abroad.
EESL is a joint venture of NTPC, PFC, REC and Power Grid Corporation to facilitate execution of energy-efficiency projects.
