After toiling for nearly six hours, Forest Officials and public today rescued a two-year-old elephant calf, which accidentally fell into an abandoned well in Obeli, about 70 km from here.
The female calf was part of a herd, numbering about 20 elephants, which was moving through the place, considered to be the Asia's largest elephant corridor and slipped to the well accidentally last night, forest department sources said.
Based on information, senior Forest Department officials, including DFO, and public rushed to the place around 6.00 AM and started rescue operations, even as the remaining elephants in the herd watching the process from a distance of 200 metres, they said.
A ramp was created in the well by putting sand, loose soil and also stones, by which the elephant tied with ropes was brought up around 12 Noon.
The calf immediately ran and joined the herd and started its journey through the corridor to jungles, the sources said.
