District Mahila Court Judge N Thirunavukkarasu sentenced Thangamuthu to triple life term in the 2014 case of murder, attempt to murder and trespassing.
All the three life sentences, however, would run concurrently, the judge ruled.
According to the prosecution, Thangamuthu of Kodumanal village of Erode district had transferred three acres of land to his son-in-law Arunachalam a few years back.
He, however, subsequently wanted Arunachalam to return his land and went to his house and sought return of the land but the latter refused.
In a fit of rage, Thangamuthu drew his sickle and hacked Valliammal, killing her on the spot.
Karuppusamy also suffered grievous cuts while trying to save his wife.
The judge also ordered Thangamuthu to pay Rs 30,000, spent on treatment of Karuppusamy.
