The fire broke out at the record room of the Old Collectorate Building near the district magistrate bungalow in Howrah city at 10.50 am, fire brigade sources said.
According to them, the blaze was brought under control at 12.20 pm after a firefight of nearly one and half hour, using eight fire tenders.
With vehicular movement to Howrah from the metropolis and vice versa having been controlled owing to the blaze, major traffic snarls occurred on arterial roads leading to Howrah bridge.
People going to Howrah station to board long distance trains were inconvenienced alongwith thousand others going for work at Burrabazar area, the trading and business hub of the city.
