The 32-year-old musician said he had "nerve-racking" video call with Spielberg where his pitch even received a green signal from the director but things did not go his way in the end.
"I did a video conference call with him, it was the most nerve-racking experience of my life. It went really well and we had a call five minutes after to say he wants everyone to fly out to New York to meet him," Fletcher told Metro newspaper.
The singer-songwriter had to eventually turn down Spielberg as he could not move out to New York for the project.
But the musical never got made as the 70-year-old filmmaker decided to drop the idea.
"He's not going to direct it. He wanted to but it's a complicated story. Hopefully, one day it'll get made," Fletcher said.
