Flood situation improves in Assam; authorities assessing

There has been no report of any loss of life in flood-related incidents in the past 24 hours and the overall situation has improved considerably in Assam, a report by state disaster management authority said.

A total of 50,334 people are still reeling under floods as against 68,000 yesterday in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Charaideo, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts of the state, the report by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said, adding that 36 relief camps, running in the affected districts, have provided shelter to 13,555 residents.

Among the rivers that are still flowing above the danger level are Desang in Sibsagar, Dhansiri at Numaligarh and Jia Bharali at Sonitpur areas.

At present, 166 villages are inundated by floodwaters and 670 hectares of croplands have been damaged.

The roads and bridges were damaged in Lakhimpur and Charaideo districts with the authorities currently assessing the loss incurred in the current wave of floods.

Three deaths in flood-related incidents were reported yesterday, taking the toll to 31 in the state.
