The minister presented Gill, who missed the felicitation by PM Narendra Modi at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup's opening ceremony, with a cash award of Rs five lakh along with a shawl and a memento, the Ministry said in a statement.
Speaking after the ceremony, Gill said he is happy with football's progress as the FIFA U-17 world Cup attracted a lot of attention throughout the nation especially among the youth and school students.
An Arjuna awardee, the 67-year-old Gill had captained the Indian team at the 1978 Bangkok Asian Games.
