Former Congress MLA Prashant Thakur who resigned from the Maharashtra Assembly, joined BJP at a public rally at Panvel, in the adjoining Thane district, in the presence of Union Road Transport and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari.
Peeved at Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan's stance on the Kharghar toll plaza issue, Thakur resigned as Congress MLA recently.
He had said that his move was prompted by Maharashtra government's refusal to exempt residents of the entire Panvel taluka from paying toll at the under-construction Kamothe-Kharghar toll plaza.
Thakur was a prominent member of the Rahul Gandhi brigade in Maharashtra which included Youth Congress leader Rajiv Satav, who is now a Lok Sabha member.
