Claiming that the injured were their supporters, BJP and RSS activists held protests outside the Govind Nagar police station, and demanded action against a police constable, close to the attackers, who allegedly opened fire in the melee from his service revolver.
City SP Omveer Singh said, "Constable Arvind has been withdrawn from duty and inquiry was ordered. If he is found guilty, stern action would be taken against him."
"The trouble started when some anti-social elements started construction activities on a plot of land owned by RSS activist Nanak Chand," he said, adding "after being opposed, they attacked Nanak, his wife Munni Devi, sister-in-law Ataro Devi and brother Mohan".
The injured were admitted to the district hospital.
Police have nabbed five of the six assailants.
