Fracas outside Mumbai club: two more cops shunted out

Two more police officials were transferred today in what appears to be fallout of the fracas which took place outside a city club, an incident for which Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had apologised.
Assistant Commissioner of Police N Sherkhane and senior Inspector Baburao Mukhedkar - both from Traffic Department-- have been transferred to Special Branch, a unit tasked to gather intelligence.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Quaiser Khalid confirmed the transfers but refused to comment on reasons for their sudden shifting.
However, a police source said "the NSCI Club area falls in these two officers' jurisdiction. Sherkhane and Mukhedkar were not present outside the venue despite knowing that the CM was arriving there."

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Keshav Patil was shifted to Mumbai Police Headquarters, four days after the ruckus outside NSCI Club in Worli.
The incident happened on March 1 when policemen jostled with club members to prevent their entry during a function attended by Fadnavis.

An inquiry was ordered and it indicted policemen for not handling the situation in an orderly manner.
Patil was deployed outside the club when the police under his supervision stopped private vehicles to make way for the Chief Minister's convoy. Video footage showed them grappling with some of the club members, including an elderly person.

It was seen as an instance of people being hassled due to 'VIP' culture, and Opposition targeted Fadnavis over the issue. The Chief Minister later apologised for the inconvenience caused to common people.
According to sources, the inquiry report highlighted lapses by police and made some recommendations to avoid repeat of such an incident.
