A young homeless man who claimed he heard voices in his head killed a 90-year-old villager in southern France and then ate his tongue and heart, officials said today.
The 26-year-old went into his victim's house on Thursday evening in the sleepy hamlet of Nouilhan, home to some 200 people, and bashed open his victim's head with an iron rod, investigators said.
He ripped out the man's heart and tongue, ate them, and then burnt the body. After that, he set fire to the house and the flames alerted the victim's son, who lives nearby.
Prior to his arrest, the youth also attacked another man, hitting him against a tractor in the village, located near the border with Spain.
