He said an estimate showed that around 35,000 children need cochlear implants annually in India, an official statement said.
"Government of India has made a provision to sponsor 500 numbers under the ADIP scheme which is minuscule in comparison to the actual requirement," he said.
The ADIP scheme provides assistance to disabled persons for purchasing or fitting of aids and appliances.
Till date more than 1,000 cochlear implant surgeries have been successfully conducted in the country, the minister said.
He said it was very heartening that public sector undertakings and corporate sectors were coming forward to fulfil their social responsibility by helping those with disabilities.
He congratulated the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and the Power Finance Corporation (PFC) for their initiative. He also called upon people and organisations to come forward in this noble mission.
