According to a complaint filed by the 21-year-old male victim, the girl was sitting near the campus pool with him late last night when a few youths started eve-teasing her followed by some verbal abuses.
The accused subsequently called more of their accomplices, also University students, and started assaulting them with sticks. They also thrashed her mobile phone, police said.
Ritesh Badgurjar, a 3rd year BA student of the varsity, was admitted to hospital with multiple fractures, while the girl student received bruises, they said.
One of the miscreants was arrested today and named five other people involved in this connection, they said.
A case was booked under various sections of IPC, including SC/ST act, against the 28 youths named in the FIR, police said.
Scores of hostel students and student union leaders held a protest outside the Vice Chancellor's house in the varsity campus demanding arrest of the culprits.
The protest ended midnight after DCP-East and VC secretariat assured swift action.
