Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today attended the valedictory function of a police sports meet at the National Police Academy (NPA) here, where she said she has been invited for the first time in 35 years for such an event.
She heartily thanked the Director of Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) Aruna Bahuguna for inviting her as the chief guest for the concluding ceremony of Shaktiman 35th All India Police Equestrian Championship.
"She (Bahuguna) is the first one to invite me for any function, any event like this at the National Policy Academy over the last 35 years of service. Amazing. What does it show. She is the first one to have invited me. So, I am very touched," she said.
Bedi said she does not know the reason for her not being invited to the Academy for an event like the equestrian championship.
"I don't know what is the reason behind this. May be, a woman director invites a woman officer. It is not known whether I was invited as a woman or with a service orientation. But, it is strange that I got a respect like this for the first time after 35 years of service. I am feeling good," Bedi, the first woman IPS officer of the country, said.
Describing the NPA as her 'motherland' that taught her everything, she said the academy is a centre of excellence like no other police academy in the world.
Recalling her days at the police academy, she said horse riding teaches great qualities like courage, discipline, preparation, team work, hard work and bonding.
"Our National Police Academy has become a centre of excellence. Every facility is there, our Government of India has given. Such an academy I have not seen anywhere in the world. I had the opportunity to see police officers' training academies all over the world," she said.
Bedi said she would not like to "take away the shine from the event" by answering other queries from media-persons.
