The International Soybean Growers Alliance (ISGA) today said it is keen on exploring Indian market for genetically modified soybean meal in coming years amid rising livestock feed demand here.
At present, India has allowed only GM cotton for commercial cultivation and there are curbs on import of GM crops and food items into the country.
"We are visiting India for the first time to understand the market. We know India has no GM policy. However, we are here to explore opportunities in future for our GM soybean," said Pedro Vigneau of Argentina representing the Secretariat role of ISGA.
India holds enormous potential as a new market for soybeans and soy derivatives. With increasing disposable income and changing food habits it will lead to more demand for poultry and other meat products thereby increasing demand for animal feed, he told reporters here.
Soybean is one of the most used animal feeds and will play an important role in meeting the need. "We therefore want to engage with the Indian stakeholders to encourage a free world market to satisfy the increasing demand for food," he added.
ISGA officials visited China before coming to India. They are planning to meet government officials, trade bodies and industry bodies
ISGA comprises growers and industry representatives from the US, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Paraguay and Uruguay. Global soybean production is around 320 million tonnes, and India produces around 11 million tonnes.
