The Goa police has decided to check the antecedents and backgrounds of its officers, before posting them to its elite Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC), a senior police official said here today.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) O P Mishra told reporters today that "the characters, antecedents and background of the officer will be checked before deputing him to the ANC".
The ANC found itself in a controversy when it was revealed three years ago, that its officers themselves sold drugs to peddlers, forcing the department to overhaul the unit, which is now headed by an IPS officer.
Mishra said that the ANC has been watching kiosks near educational institutes, after media reports claimed that narcotics were being sold to students.
"Checks are conducted on kiosks and other suspicious places, along with the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA)," the DIG said.
