Goa today progressed to the pre-quarterfinals of Vijay Hazare trophy one-day championship despite losing by seven wickets to Hyderabad, which pulled off a consolation win to pick up their first points of the tournament at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here.
In the South Zone leg of Vijay Hazare trophy, the winner of the match between Andhra and Tamil Nadu could have stayed in contention for a berth in pre-quarters by joining Goa on 12 points today and entering a net-run-rate shootout.
But with their match getting abandoned without a ball bowled, both Andhra and Tamil Nadu could earn just two points each and finished on 10 apiece, hereby missing an opportunity to advance to the next stage.
The match between Goa and Hyderabad, which was also curtailed to 34 overs, the Goan side was bundled out for a meagre 170 in 33.3 overs. In reply, Hyderabad reached the target in 32.4 overs to post their first win.
Put in to bat, Goa kept losing wickets at regular intervals, with Hyderabad left-arm seamer Chama Milind finishing with impressive figures of four for 21.
Sagun Kamat top scored for Goa with 30. Although five Goan batsmen crossed 20-run mark but none of them could convert it into a big score.
Chasing a modest total, Hanuma Vihari and DB Ravi Teja came up with half-centuries each to reach 171 for three with eight balls to spare.
Vihari scored a 84-ball 67, while Ravi Teja hit a quickfire unbeaten 51 off just 44 balls as the duo put on 91 runs together for the third wicket.
Vihari, whose knock was studded with five fours, fell in the 32nd over with 13 runs remaining for victory, but Ravi Teja, hitting five boundaries during his innings, made sure that Goa reached home just four balls later.
Brief scores:
Goa: 170 all out in 33.3 overs (Sagun Kamat 30, Darshan Misal 27; Chama Milind 4/21).
Hyderabad: 171 for three in 32.4 overs (Hanuma Vihari 67, DB Ravi Teja 51; Robin D'Souza 2/17).
