Goa to take up road safety audit of highways

The Goa Government will undertake the road safety audit of national highways and state highways as a measure to bring down the rate of road accidents.
"We have decided to take this audit to reduce the road accidents and fatalities by 50 per cent by 2020. The audit of all the national and state highways will be taken up in Goa," State Transport director Arun Desai told reporters today.
Government has also decided to draw up a protocol to identify the accident-prone zones in the state after every two years.
Desai said these measures are being taken up as per directives of the Supreme Court.

Desai said the government as a major step has already notified the State Road Safety Policy which proposes various measures to make the roads a safer place to drive.
Transport department will work in tandem with state PWD on the initiative, he added.
Desai said as proposed in the policy, road safety councils and road safety review committees will meet once in six months and once in three months, respectively.
"We have already formed a road engineering cell comprising PWD, transport department, health department and police officials who will inspect accident-prone sites and recommend corrective measures," he added.
