Goa water dept rules out compromise in Mahadeyi water dispute

The Goa water resources department today ruled out any compromise or out of the court settlement in the Mahadeyi waterdispute case.
The statement by the water resources department comes a day after Karnataka sought a meeting with its two other riparian states Goa and Maharashtra for an amicable resolution of the Mahadeyi waterdispute among them.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah wrote a letter to his Goa counterpart Manohar Parrikar seeking tentative dates of his availability for the meeting after Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis expressed willingness for the meeting on his request for it.
Goa water resources department minister Vinod Palyekar today ruled out any such settlement.

"There will be no compromise or out of the court settlement on Mahadeyi case with Karnataka," Palyekar said in a statement released here.
"This is the official stand of my department. I will discuss the matter with chief minister Manohar Parrikar," the minister said accusing Karnataka of playing a double game in the name of out of the court settlement.

Goa and Karnataka are fighting a battle over diversion of Mahadeyi river water.
The case is being heard by Mahadeyi Water Dispute Tribunal (MWDT) in New Delhi.
"Karnataka has been exposed before the tribunal in Delhi and our legal team is doing a wonderful job," the minister said.

Karnataka has planned 12 dams across river Mahadeyi, while Maharashtra wants to construct four dams.
Goa has objected to this as Mahadeyi is the lifeline for over 50 per cent of the state population.
MWDT has suggested that the three chief ministers try and reach an amicable settlement to the water dispute.
Following this, the Maharashtra Chief Minister had called for a tri-partite meeting in October, but the Goa Chief Minister did not attend it.
