Govt serves notice to doctors and nurses for wrong operation

Tripura government has served notices to a team of doctors and nurses which operated on the urinary tract of a patient instead of removal of a tumour in his mouth, official sources said today.
The operation had taken place at Agartala government medical college recently and when the matter came to light government instituted an inquiry headed by the Director of Health department which found that the medical team was responsible for wrong treatment.
"The health department served show-cause notices to four doctors and as many numbers of nurses and after getting their replies the government would give them exemplary punishment," Health Minister Tapan Chakraborty told reporters.

"It is an instance of gross medical negligence and the medical personnel would be given exemplary punishment to stop recurrence of such incident in hospitals of the state," he said.
It might be a case of mistaken identity as the medical college had another patient in the same name, who was admitted with the problems in urinary tract, Chakraborty said.
One Ratan Das, 53, a small trader from Ampi in Gomati district was admitted to the Medical College early last month and had undergone the operation. He was admitted for removal of a tumour in his mouth.
His wife, Jhulan filed a complaint with the police, health minister and other authorities, seeking action against the erring medical personalities.
