The government will set up an academy next year on cooperative studies in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mentor and RSS leader Laxman Madhav Rao Inamdar in Gurugram, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh today said.
The announcement was made at an event organised to celebrate birth centenary of Inamdar, one of the founding fathers of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Addressing the event, Singh also said the government will celebrate birth anniversary of Inamdar every year to recall his contribution to India's cooperative movement.
Inamdar had led cooperative movement with a strong belief that the country's economic progress can be achieved with the help of cooperatives and by protecting lower and weaker section of the society, he said.
Now, cooperatives are functioning in different areas and even the government is providing training and financial help to strengthen them, he added.
To further strengthen training of cooperative members, the minister said, "The government has decided to set up 'Laxmanrao Inamdar Academy for cooperative studies and Human Resource Centre' on January 12".
Asserting that cooperatives have played an important role in the country's development, he said the centre has given about Rs 29,000 crore as loan and subsidy to cooperatives across the country during the first three years of the Modi government.
