Govt to soon evolve river sediment management policy:CWC chief

The government will soon evolve an environment-friendly river sediment management policy, Central Water Commission (CWC) chairman Narendra Kumar said here today.
"It is essential to devise a methodology for sediment management which is environment-friendly and feasible technically as well as economically," an official release quoted him as saying.
Inaugurating a day-long national seminar on 'Sediment management in Indian rivers', the CWC chairman said silting of rivers has assumed "serious" proportions over the years.
He observed that sediment management till late was based on limited scientific knowledge and opined that a different approach to sediment management is "desirable".
The day-long conference was attended by expert member of National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) M A Chitale and IIT-Kanpur professor Vinod Tare.

Officials from Ministries of Agriculture; Environment, Forest and Climate Change; Road Transport and Highways and Shipping; Urban Development and the state governments of Bihar and Uttarakhand were also present.
