Gowda, who is India's first ever CWG medallist in discus throw, managed a distance of 64.32m in his first attempt and was way ahead of second-placed Apostolos Parellis (61.91m) from Cyprus and Jamaica's Chad Wright (61.08m).
Gowda had won a silver medal at the Delhi edition of the CWG in 2010. His personal best is 66.28m.
The top six in her group were at joint 1.85m while four others also managed 1.85m height in the other group.
Sahana's personal best is 1.89m.
Meanwhile, disappointment was in store for Mayookha Johny as her best effort of 6.11m was not good enough to qualify for the women's long jump event.
