In its bid to promote non-conventional energy generation in Odisha, the state government today decided to set up grid-based solar roof top projects on PPP (public-private-partnership) mode.
This was decided at a high-level meeting presided over by Chief Secretary Jugal Kishore Mohapatra. The state government has set a target of producing 5 to 10 MW of solar power by installing roof top solar power projects.
As a part of this exercise, it has been decided in the meeting to start a pilot project, Energy Secretary P K Jena said, adding at the initial level, the project will be started on roof tops of non-residential government buildings in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.
It has also been decided to invite tenders from open market on competitive bidding. A separate nodal agency would be in place soon for implementation of the solar projects in the state.
"The energy department has also been asked to complete the initial processes and identify buildings for the purpose within November 15," an official said.
Jena said, Odisha has a great potential for production of grid connected solar energy. Various incentives are also available through state and central government schemes. 1 KW power can be generated over a roof top of 15 sq m area, which is available in small residential houses also.
He said the scheme will be extended after success of the pilot project to be taken up by the government.
