Gujarat has received approval to start two new Government medical colleges with capacity to admit 150 students each.
The permission has been granted by Medical Council of India (MCI), the apex body for medical education in the country, Health Minister Nitin Patel today said.
The colleges will come up at Himmatnagar in north Gujarat and Junagadh town in Saurashtra region, he said in a release.
With the addition of these 300 new seats, the total number of seats for MBBS course in the State will reach 3,230, said the release.
At present, there are a total of 19 medical colleges in the State having 2,930 seats for MBBS course.
The Government has already constructed the buildings and set up related infrastructure at Himmatnagar and Junagadh at a cost of Rs 250 crore each, the Minister said.
The state had sought permission from MCI to start the admission process for the academic year 2015-16. After getting the application, a team of MCI inspected these colleges this month and presented a report to its Executive Committee, which gave the approval, said Patel.
