Gulberg case: Court seeks documents on role of 4 IPS officers

A court conducting the trial in the Gulberg Society riot case here today ordered the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to provide documents relating to the roles of four retired IPS officers from its closure report.
The closure report, filed before another court after the Supreme Court-appointed SIT probed the complaint of Zakia Jafri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, gives clean chit to Narendra Modi (then the Chief Minister) and others with regard to the 2002 riots in Gujarat.
Judge P B Desai today directed SIT to provide around 1,200 documents regarding the four officers from the report to Gulberg Society riot victims' lawyer S M Vora.
The victims/survivors of Gulberg Society massacre have sought to make the then city Police Commissioner P C Pandey, Joint Commissioner of Police M K Tandon, Assistant Commissioner of Police P B Gondia and Assistant Commissioner (Crime Branch) S S Chudasama the accused for negligence.
The court is hearing final arguments in the case. Special Prosecutor of SIT R C Kodekar today summed up the testimonies of three witnesses -- Sikandar Syed, Fakir Mohammad and his son Ejaz Ali.
He submitted that these witnesses spoke about seeing Ehsan Jafri being dragged out by the mob, and also identified six of the total of 66 accused.
Sixty-nine persons, including Eshan Jafri, were killed at the Gulberg Society here on February 28, 2002 during the post-Godhra riots.
