Police on Friday seized gutkha worth Rs 37.80 lakh from a container truck here in central Maharashtra and arrested one person, an official said.
The seizure was made by the Anti-Dacoity Squad (ADS) of the district police.
District ADS chief Yashwant Jadhav said the police received a tip-off that a container truckwith the banned commodity was on its way to Beed district from Delhi.
An ADS team intercepted the vehicle and found 36 bags of gutkha in it valued at Rs 37.80 lakh, he said.
The police arrested the truck driver, Hamid Khan Majed Khan (33), a resident of Ameer Nagar Tijara in Alwar district of Rajasthan, Jadhav said.
He told the police the gutkha consignment belonged to one Abdul Gani Osman, a resident of Faridabad in Haryana.
The police have informed the Food Drugs Administration (FDA) about the seizure of gutkha, whose manufacturing, sale and consumption is banned in Maharashtra.
