Noted space scientist Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan Thursday underlined the need for harnessing science and technology (S&T) for the nation's development.
The former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman said science and technology must be used to improve the quality of life of citizens.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed various departments of his government to fully utilise the capabilities of Indian space endeavours to effect transformational development of the country, he said.
The Padma Vibhushan awardee was addressing the 28th convocation ceremony of the Dr Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya here.
"It is thus, timely that we start examining every issue that could impact positively the role of S&T in national development," he added.
A strong base has been built in terms of institutional infrastructure, R&D facilities and development of human resources, said Kasturirangan, who is also the Chancellor of the Central University of Rajasthan.
"This is evident from our performance, which has resulted in significant S&T-led achievements in strategic sectors of nuclear, space, defence and industries, besides of course basic sciences," Kasturirangan added.
There is, however, an urgent need to strengthen the role of S&T in the context of addressing the issues of societal development, he said.
"This has been highlighted by our honourable Prime Minister during one of his 'Mann Ki Baat' addresses to the nation," the noted space scientist said.
The PM has exhorted scientists and technologists to find simple, affordable and innovative solutions to address the problems of the society related to health, drinking water, quality education, environment and improving agricultural productivity, he said.
